These are the terms you agree to by using Narrative. If anything here is unclear, email [email protected].
Eligibility
You must be 18 or older to use Narrative. Accounts belonging to minors may be closed.
Your account
Your account is your email address. There is no password. To sign in, we email you a link that works once and expires after fifteen minutes. A sign-in lasts sixty days, and you can sign out any session.
Anyone who can read your email can sign in to your account, so avoid using a shared inbox.
What it costs
Four plans, each billed monthly:

Every plan has the same features and the same story memory. The plans differ only in how much writing they include each month. If you reach your plan's allowance, new passages wait until the next calendar month, or you can move to a larger plan. Reading and editing your stories never stop.
Payments go through Stripe. We never see your card; we only keep a Stripe customer id and whether your subscription is paid. Your plan renews on the same date each month until you cancel.
Free trial
Your first subscription starts with a 7-day free trial, on any plan. You enter a card at checkout, and nothing is charged until the trial ends. If you cancel before then, you pay nothing.
When the trial ends, your plan starts: Stripe charges its monthly price, and it renews monthly until you cancel. A trial includes less writing than a paid month. If you use it up, you can start your plan early from your account, which charges you that day.
One free trial per person. An account that has had a subscription before pays from the start.
Cancelling
You can cancel at any time from the billing page in your account. If you cancel during a free trial, you are not charged. After that, your plan keeps working until the end of the month you paid for. We don't refund partial months, and we won't charge you again.
Without a plan you can still read and edit all your stories, but you can't get new passages written.
What you can write
Narrative supports a broad range of fiction. You choose the tone and content preferences for your stories, including whether to permit mature material.
Three things are not allowed: sexual content involving minors or characters written to seem like minors; sexual content about real people who haven't agreed to it; and anything illegal where you live. Accounts that do any of these are closed without a refund.
The AI model that writes your story is run by another company and has its own rules. It will sometimes refuse a request, and we can't override it.
Your stories are yours
You own what you write and what Narrative writes for you. We don't publish it, sell it, show it to anyone, or use it to train AI.
Each account's stories are stored separately. We only look at your stories if you ask us to, or to fix a problem you've reported.
Where your writing goes
Writing a passage sends the relevant story text, the story's memory and your instruction to our AI provider, which writes the passage. The Helper and story setup use the same provider. Narration sends passage text to ElevenLabs. Sign-in emails go through Postmark, and payments go through Stripe.
Each of them handles what it receives under its own terms. The Privacy Policy lists what each one gets.
No guarantees
Narrative is a small service and it will sometimes be down. We can't promise it will always be available, that every passage will be good, or that the AI model won't change over time.
Keep a copy of anything you don't want to lose.
The service is provided as is. As far as the law allows, our liability to you is limited to what you've paid us in the last twelve months.
Closing your account
You can cancel your subscription at any time. Email us if you want your account and everything in it deleted.
We'll close accounts that break the rules above, put the service or other people at risk, or file a chargeback instead of contacting us.
If we ever shut Narrative down, we'll tell you beforehand.
Changes to these terms
These terms change when the product does. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If a change affects what you pay for, we'll email you before it takes effect.
